How Does Your Retirement Income Compare to Others

July 15, 2025 Posted by Bill Benoist News, retirement

As someone navigating the later stages of my career, I’ve been wondering: How does my retirement income compare to others? Am I where I should be financially?

If you’re having similar thoughts, I think you will find value in my latest video:

How Does Your Retirement Income Compare to Others

I recently came across some retirement statistics that really surprised me and changed how I think about retirement planning. The numbers were quite different from what I expected, and they helped me understand what retirement actually looks like for most Americans.

Here’s what caught my attention: there’s a notable difference between what we assume typical retirees have and what they actually live on. The gap between median and average retirement income is larger than I realized.

But income is only part of the picture. When I looked into actual retirement spending patterns, I found something interesting. Many retirees are living comfortably on amounts that might seem low at first glance.

It made me reconsider what retirement “needs” to look like.

The debt situation was also eye-opening. Most retirement-age people carry some form of debt into their golden years, and it’s not just mortgages.

The reality is retirement isn’t about matching someone else’s numbers. It’s about creating a plan that works for your specific situation.

Regional costs, health considerations, family support, and personal priorities all play important roles in your individual planning.

Your retirement journey is personal, and successful retirement planning looks different for everyone. Sometimes the most fulfilling retirements aren’t necessarily the ones with the highest income numbers.
