Stop Taking Boring Photos! Try This Simple Technique

June 16, 2026 Posted by Bill Benoist News No Comments

If you’ve ever looked at one of your photos and thought, “Why doesn’t this feel as strong as it should?”—you’re not alone. Often, the issue isn’t your camera or settings. It’s composition.

One powerful technique that can instantly improve your images is figure to ground.

What Is Figure to Ground?

At its core, figure to ground is about making your subject clearly stand out from the background. When done well, the viewer’s eye goes exactly where you want it to go—no confusion, no distractions.

Three Simple Ways to Use It

There are three approaches I like to use with this technique.

First, consider contrast. High contrast images—especially in black and white—naturally separate the subject from the background. Bright areas pull the eye, while darker areas fall away, helping your subject pop.

Next comes background blur, often called bokeh. By using a shallow depth of field, you can soften everything behind your subject. This creates a clear visual separation and keeps attention right where it belongs.

Finally, there’s minimalism. Sometimes the best way to highlight your subject is to remove as much as possible from the scene. A clean, uncluttered background allows your subject to take center stage without competition.

Across all three approaches, the key idea is simple: give your subject space to breathe.

The next time you’re out shooting, pause for a moment before pressing the shutter. Ask yourself—what is my subject, and does it clearly stand out?

That one question can completely change how you compose your photos—and the results you get.
