Recently, I participated in a fun photography challenge for Creative Sugar Photography Ideas. This was through Shutterobi, an online photography meetup community that hosts events almost every night of the week. They cover everything from portraits and street photography to camera gear and editing techniques. One of their weekly “Photo Quests” challenged members to photograph something with sugar in it.
The moment I heard the theme, an idea immediately popped into my head. I wanted to photograph a grocery store cereal aisle filled with sugary cereal boxes and combine it with an image of a child on a sugar high. Sometimes ideas come quickly, but I’ve learned it’s always smart to have a backup plan.
Using Google Images to Spark New Photography Ideas
To find more inspiration, I went to Google Images and searched for “things with sugar in it.” That simple search opened up an entirely different creative direction. One image that caught my attention featured sugar cubes floating in midair against a dark background. I loved the contrast and simplicity of the composition.
For the cereal aisle composite, I used Adobe Lightroom Classic and Adobe Photoshop to clean up distractions, adjust the images, and blend everything together. I also used Photoshop’s Select Subject tool to quickly isolate the child from the background.
Capturing Floating Sugar Cubes with the Fuji X-T5
The floating sugar cube shots were created mostly in-camera using my Fujifilm X-T5. I used burst mode, a self-timer, and a simple black fabric backdrop to capture the sugar cubes as they dropped through the frame.
This project reminded me that creativity often starts with a simple idea and grows through experimentation. Sometimes the best photos happen when you allow yourself to explore more than one direction.
