Are you sabotaging your retirement?
As I reflect on my recent conversations about retirement, I’ve discovered a critical insight that I believe will resonate with many of you: the dangerous trap of comparing ourselves to others during our retirement years.
When we first enter retirement, it’s tempting to think everyone starts on a level playing field.
After all, we’re all simply “retired,” right?
But the reality is far more nuanced.
Our retirement experiences are deeply personal, largely shaped by our financial backgrounds and life choices.
Recently, I had a lunch with a retired doctor friend who shared elaborate travel plans—multiple timeshares, trips to Mexico, Greece, and Hawaii.
Initially, I found myself sliding into a comparative mindset, questioning my own retirement preparedness.
But then I realized something profound: our paths are uniquely our own.
The Power of Gratitude
I’ve discovered a transformative practice that has helped me navigate these comparative thoughts: daily gratitude journaling.
Inspired by the “Morning Pages” technique from “The Artist’s Way,” I now spend 30 minutes each morning stream of consciousness writing and always dedicating time to list what I’m thankful for.
This practice isn’t just feel-good rhetoric—it’s a powerful mental reset.
When those comparative thoughts creep in, gratitude becomes my anchor. I remind myself of the incredible aspects of my life that can’t be measured by travel itineraries or financial portfolios.
Practical Strategies to Overcome Comparison
Want to know my secret weapon when comparison thoughts surface? It’s surprisingly simple: I say “Stop it!” (Literally. Out loud.)
When I catch myself spiraling, I verbally interrupt that thought pattern. (Pro tip: maybe do this in private to avoid curious stares!)
