I recently discovered a practice that has genuinely transformed my daily routine and creative thinking.
It’s called “Morning Pages,” and it comes from Julia Cameron’s book “The Artist’s Way.”
This book has impacted my life more profoundly than any other book I’ve read.
Morning Pages is simple in concept but powerful in practice: write three pages of stream-of-consciousness journaling every morning without stopping.
For about 30 minutes, I put pen to paper and write whatever comes to mind – even if that’s “I have nothing to write about.” The magic happens when you push through that initial resistance.
Starting wasn’t easy
I actually attempted it five years ago, found the book difficult to connect with, and abandoned it entirely.
But after hearing recommendations from friends and seeing other content creators discuss it, I decided to give it another chance.
This time with a structured approach: one chapter per week, holding myself accountable to the daily pages.
By the end of the 12-week journey, I was completely hooked. Now I’m rereading the book to discover nuggets I missed the first time around.
Beyond the Morning Pages, Cameron recommends setting aside time for yourself through an “Artist Date.”
This could be exploring nature, visiting a gallery, seeing a movie, or in my case, taking my camera out to take pictures.
The benefits have been remarkable
Starting my day by “dumping” noisy thoughts creates mental clarity. As I write, solutions to problems naturally emerge.
Sometimes I rant about politics (things I’d never say aloud), brainstorm YouTube ideas, or express gratitude – which has made me more optimistic and happier overall.
If you’re interested in trying Morning Pages, I recommend the same approach that worked for me: commit to one chapter per week.
The chapters are short and will take you no more than 20 minutes to finish. What I did was to read one chapter every Sunday.
By the end of 12 weeks, you’ll likely find yourself addicted to this transformative practice, just as I did.
