Getting Past Age Discrimination on the Resume

As you may know, I primarily work with individuals in mid-to-late career.

For these individuals, age discrimination can be an obstacle.

In my latest video, I delved into how age bias can often form even before you step into the interview room.

What’s intriguing is a significant study conducted a few years ago on how age discrimination can start at the resume.

Back in 2017, a groundbreaking study highlighted the alarming impact of age discrimination on job seekers.

This study, reported in the Chronicle, sent over 40,000 fabricated resumes to 13,000 job openings.

The resumes were almost identical but for gender and the inclusion of high school graduation dates.

There were three age groups one could determine from the graduation dates

• 29-31
• 49-51
• 64 +

As resumes moved up the age ladder, callbacks significantly decreased.

If you’re a seasoned professional –  50 and above – you’re likely aware that age perception can impact how employers view you.

So here are some strategies to sidestep this challenge with the resume.

Trimming the Timeline
When constructing your resume, focus on the last 10 to 15 years of experience. This keeps your document fresh and reduces any potential gaps in employment history.

Unlock the “Additional Work Experience” Vault
For roles from further back in your career, utilize a section named “Additional Work Experience.” This smart move omits dates, giving your resume a modern edge and circumventing gaps.

Revamp Your Opening
Dust off any traces of an “objective statement.” Instead, introduce yourself with a professional profile highlighting your key strengths, skills, and industries you’ve excelled in.

Email Etiquette
Your email address might reveal more than you think. Trade outdated addresses for a sleek, professional Gmail account. It’s a subtle but effective modernization.

Remember, your resume is your prelude to the interview. It reflects your confidence and potential, setting the stage for further interactions.
