Learning Photoshop After 60

May 20, 2025 Posted by Bill Benoist News No Comments

I have started learning Photoshop after 60.

As Seneca wisely observed, “While we teach, we learn.” This philosophy has guided my approach to continuous learning, particularly as I embrace new challenges in retirement.

Recently, I’ve been tackling Photoshop—that powerful but intimidating platform that had been sitting unused in my Adobe subscription.

As a comfortable Lightroom user and amateur photographer, I knew mastering Photoshop would elevate my creative abilities, but the learning curve seemed steep.

What I’ve discovered is that teaching myself a new skill—and then sharing that knowledge with others—creates a powerful cycle of growth.

This is what I have tried to do in this week’s video by sharing one of my latest creative photography project. A technique called “shooting in the round” popularized by world renowned photographer Pep Ventosa.

The process involves:

1. Setting up a simple scene with a single object
2. Taking multiple photos while rotating the object slightly between shots
3. Bringing those images into Photoshop as layers
4. Experimenting with opacity and blend modes to create a dreamy, impressionistic-final image

The beauty of this technique is that it’s entirely personal. Ten people could follow the same process and produce ten distinctly different results.

What matters is creating something that resonates with you.

This project reinforced something I’ve always believed: continuous learning isn’t just important for our careers—it’s essential for keeping our minds active and engaged in retirement.

Whether it’s mastering a new software, exploring a creative technique, or developing any new skill, the process of learning itself brings immense satisfaction.
