There are times when life has a funny way of giving us exactly what we need, even if it isn’t what we planned.
A few weeks ago, I decided I wanted a camera that I could slip into my pocket and carry with me every day. As much as I love my Fuji X-T5, there are plenty of times when I simply don’t want to carry a larger camera. So, after searching online for weeks, I found what I believed was a great deal on a Ricoh GR III and placed the order.
It turned out I had bought something entirely different.
A Small Mistake That Taught Me Something
When the camera finally arrived, I was excited to try it. A few days later, however, I noticed one small word that I had completely overlooked. Instead of a Ricoh GR III, I had purchased a Ricoh GR Digital III, a camera introduced back in 2009.
At first, I felt disappointed. Then, instead of rushing to return it, I decided to learn more about it. As I read about the camera, I discovered that many photographers still treasure it for its unique CCD sensor and the character it brings to photographs. That changed my perspective.
Finding Joy in the Unexpected
Since then, this little camera has gone almost everywhere with me. Because it easily fits in my pocket, I find myself taking more walks, noticing more details, and capturing moments I might have otherwise missed.
More importantly, this experience reminded me that photography isn’t really about owning the newest camera. It’s about paying attention. It’s about slowing down long enough to appreciate the beauty that’s already around us.
Looking back, I thought I had made a mistake. Instead, I found a camera I genuinely enjoy and received an unexpected reminder that sometimes our greatest discoveries come from the things we never intended to find.
Whether you’re passionate about photography or simply navigating a new season of life, perhaps the lesson is the same: keep an open mind. Sometimes the path we didn’t plan becomes the one we’re most grateful we took.
