Stop Comparing Your Photos To Everyone Else’s!

Comparison Steals Your Joy in Photography — Gratitude Restores It

Have you ever scrolled through Instagram and felt a pang of jealousy over someone else’s photos? Maybe they own the latest camera body, travel to Iceland or Patagonia, or shoot wildlife in Alaska while you photograph flowers in your own backyard. If so, you’re not alone. In fact, nearly every photographer wrestles with comparison and envy at some point.

Why We Compare Ourselves to Others

A few years ago, I took Yale’s “Science of Wellbeing” course with Professor Laurie Santos, and one lesson stuck with me: our brains naturally compare themselves to people who seem to have more — more money, more talent, more opportunities. Consequently, we rarely notice how much we already have. Instead, we fixate on photographers who fly around the world, land sponsorships, or drop thousands on gear.

However, that comparison misses an important truth: we’re measuring our lives against completely different circumstances. Retirement changes things. Money gets tighter, health limits our hikes, and responsibilities keep us closer to home. That’s okay — photography doesn’t end when life shifts; it simply evolves with us.

Chasing Gear Won’t Bring Lasting Happiness

Psychologists call another trap “miswanting” — the belief that a new lens or camera will finally make us happy. Yet research shows that excitement over new gear fades quickly through a process called adaptation. Before long, we’re eyeing the next purchase, trapped in a cycle much like Groundhog Day.

So I asked myself: am I jealous of the photographs, or of the opportunities behind them? Ultimately, I realized creativity has nothing to do with stamps in a passport. It’s about noticing beauty nearby — in gardens, puddles, or the same tree photographed all year long.

Therefore, stop comparing yourself to other photographers. Instead, compare yourself only to the photographer you were last year. Gratitude, not comparison, restores your joy.
