Why Every Photographer Needs a Photo Project

September 1, 2026 Posted by Bill Benoist News No Comments

Have you ever grabbed your camera, driven to a local park, wandered for an hour, and then gone home feeling completely unsatisfied?

Most photographers face this moment at some point. Fortunately, there’s a simple fix: start a photo project.

Instead of chasing random shots, choose one subject or theme and commit to photographing it over weeks, months, or even years.

Suddenly, you stop asking “Where should I go today?” and start asking “What can I add to my project?” That small shift changes everything.

How a Project Sharpens Your Eye

Once you commit to a theme, you naturally become more intentional. Rather than wandering and hoping for a good shot, you actively look for something specific.

As a result, you begin noticing details that most people walk right past.

Furthermore, the more you photograph one subject, the more possibilities you discover.

You experiment with different lighting, seasons, and compositions, and gradually your project shifts from being about the subject to being about how you see it.

That’s exactly when your personal style starts to emerge.

Where Your Project Might Lead

Interestingly, you never really know where a project will take you.

One friend spent years photographing aviation and eventually published a book.

Another turned a project into a calendar.

Still, not every project needs a commercial outcome; sometimes the process itself is the reward.

Since retiring, I’ve especially enjoyed revisiting the same locations, waiting for better light, and taking my time.

So, don’t overthink it. Pick something you’re genuinely curious about — old barns, birds, waterfalls, vintage signs, anything — and commit to it for the next year.

You might be surprised how much you grow along the way.
