Job Search Strategy

June 25, 2024 Posted by Bill Benoist Job Search Strategies, Uncategorized No Comments

The job market has changed.  Sending resumes by the hundreds seldom works.  You need a well-defined strategy.  And that’s the topic of this week’s video.

Job Search Strategy Overhaul – Get Hired Faster

In this video, I discuss a five-step plan to revamp your job search.

Step 1: Personal Branding.

Start with your resume, featuring a professional summary. This summary should capture who you are, the value you bring, your experience, key skills, and unique strengths. Your personal brand should be consistent across your resume and LinkedIn profile, making a strong impression on hiring managers and recruiters.

Step 2: Networking with Purpose.

Networking goes beyond exchanging business cards. Inform your friends and family that you are exploring new opportunities. Use LinkedIn to post about your job search strategically, roughly every three to four weeks. Casual conversations can unexpectedly lead to job opportunities.

Step 3: Targeted Applications.

A scattergun approach to applications is ineffective. Tailor each application to include keywords from the job description. Personalize your cover letters to specific hiring managers. This targeted approach increases your chances of bypassing the applicant tracking systems used by many companies.

Step 4: Continuous Learning

Continuous skill development is crucial, especially for mid-to-late career professionals. Employers often worry that older workers may resist training. Counteract this by acquiring new certifications through platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Skillshare, or Udemy. Highlight these on your resume to demonstrate your commitment to professional growth.

Step 5: Interview Preparation.

Interviews can be daunting, but preparation is key. Be ready to answer questions about your background, previous job, salary expectations, and weaknesses. Practice responses to behavioral questions like “Tell me about a time when…” to present yourself confidently and competently.
