Starting new adventures with photography after retiring has become my passion.
When I first picked up my camera after retiring, I never imagined it would become such a transformative passion.
Like many of you approaching or navigating your own career transitions, I found myself searching for something that would bring both purpose and creative fulfillment to this new chapter.
Recently, I spent a morning at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, experimenting with various techniques. I combined traditional compositions with ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), multiple exposures, and Pep Ventosa’s “in-the-round” method—walking around subjects while photographing, then layering the images in Photoshop.
The results were stunning impressionistic images that captured not just the visual beauty of the roses, but their essence and emotion.
Starting New Adventures With Photography After Retiring!
This creative exploration has become more than a hobby; it’s become a source of genuine purpose and excitement.
For those of you considering what comes next in your careers or retirement, I encourage you to explore passions that challenge you creatively. Photography, particularly these experimental techniques, offers endless opportunities for growth and artistic expression.
But photography is just one of many outlets to explore creativity. The beauty of this life stage is having the reward of time.
Consider writing—journaling, poetry, or that novel you’ve always dreamed of completing.
Many find profound satisfaction in painting, drawing, or learning a musical instrument. Gardening transforms outdoor spaces into living art, while cooking becomes creative expression when experimenting with flavors.
Crafts like woodworking, pottery, or quilting engage our hands and minds in tactile creation.
Even dance, whether formal classes or simply moving to music in your living room, celebrates the body’s ability to express emotion.
The key is finding what resonates with your spirit and makes you lose track of time. What matters isn’t perfection, but the pure joy of creating something that didn’t exist before you brought it into being.
