Three Lensbaby Lenses, One Rose Garden
Spring brings an explosion of color, and as a result, it creates the perfect opportunity for flower photography. Recently, I visited the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, one of my favorite places in Northern California to photograph roses in bloom. Since the garden features thousands of beautiful roses, it provided an ideal setting to compare three unique Lensbaby lenses.
A Creative Lens Comparison
For this photography outing, I brought three Lensbaby lenses: the Velvet 56, the Composer Pro with the Sweet 50 Optic, and the Twist 28. Although I photographed the same subjects under similar conditions, each lens produced a distinctly different artistic result.
First, the Velvet 56 created its signature soft, dreamy glow. Consequently, the images felt gentle and almost painterly. Next, the Composer Pro with the Sweet 50 Optic allowed me to tilt the lens up to 30 degrees. Because of this flexibility, I could move the sweet spot of focus around the frame while allowing the surrounding areas to blur beautifully. Finally, the Twist 28 produced its unique swirling background effect, which added motion and energy to many of the photographs.
There Is No Right or Wrong Choice
After capturing more than 100 images, I selected six photographs from each lens to share. However, the goal was never to determine a winner. Instead, I wanted to demonstrate how different creative tools can transform the same subject into entirely different works of art.
Photography is deeply personal. Therefore, the lens that appeals most to one photographer may not be the favorite of another. While some photographers may prefer the dreamy look of the Velvet 56, others may gravitate toward the selective focus of the Sweet 50 or the dynamic swirl of the Twist 28.
Ultimately, creativity is not about finding the “best” lens. Rather, it is about discovering the tools that help you express your own artistic vision. That is what makes photography such a rewarding and personal journey.
